Tree Love March 2025

“No sun outlasts its sunset, but will rise again and bring the dawn.” – Maya Angelou

“Trees are the Earth’s endless effort to speak to the listening heaven.” – Rabindranath Tagore

Recently, I visited my cousin, who feels more like a friend to me. This time, I chose to stay at her place—a decision that didn’t sit well with many senior relatives. Since I visit my maternal side only once a year and this place once in five years, my choice was met with disapproval. Some still aren’t talking to me because, according to my mom, I broke a long-standing tradition of staying at my eldest maasi’s house.

But I believe change is necessary. Respect and formality out of obligation no longer define my choices. At this stage in life, I value my space and the people I truly connect with. Pleasing everyone is no longer my priority. If choosing to stay with my cousin—someone of my own age—is considered rude, then so be it. I’ve spent years adhering to traditions and engaging with elders, but now, at 40-plus, I feel it’s enough.

I had a wonderful time at her place. For the first time, we truly bonded beyond the occasional interactions through our mothers, who always reminded us that we were distant relatives. She cooked simple yet delicious meals, we visited Sanchi, enjoyed bhutta and amrud, clicked pictures, and spent the entire night talking till 4 AM.

Some relationships are like magnets—they pull you back, no matter how many years pass.

Her society had beautiful lawns with well-maintained tree-lined paths. The benches nestled under the trees created a peaceful and picturesque sight. I especially loved capturing the sunrises and sunsets there—they had a calming effect, making me appreciate the small joys of life even more.
