Ganpati Special Vatli Dal Recipe
Vatli or Watli Dal is a traditional dish from the Maharashtrian cuisine. Watli dal is a classic dish made by soaking the Bengal gram overnight in water and then ground with salt, cumin, and green chilies; finally seasoned with some mustard seeds, turmeric powder, and chili powder. It is slightly a dry dish that can be also served as a snack during tea time and is generally accompanied by Kairi Panna or Tea/ Coffee.
बाप्पांच्या नैवेद्याची वाटली डाळ – This traditional dish is specially prepared as a farewell dish to Lord Ganesha on the Visarjan day (Anant Chaturdashi – the day when the Ganesh idol is immersed in water). It is served as a condiment and when prepared during festivals.
Ingredients
- 2 cups Gram Dal/ chana dal(soaked)
- 2 Tbsp Oil / तेल
- 4-5 Green Chilies/ हिरवी मिरची
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds/ जिरे
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds/ मोहरी
- 1/2 tsp Asafoetida/ हिंग
- 1 tsp Turmeric Powder/ हळद
- 10-12 Curry Leaves/ कढीपत्ता
- 2 tsp Salt/ मीठ (to taste)
- 1 tsp sugar/ साखर
- Chopped Coriander/ कोथिंबीर – to garnish
- Grated fresh coconut/ ओले खोबरे – to garnish
- Lemon juice
Method:
- Wash the chana dal 2-3 times with water, drain all the water, and wash the dal thoroughly & soak it for at least 4 hours.
- Add 4-5 green chilies and grind coarsely in a grinder or a food processor. Drain the water and transfer the soaked dal into a blender jar. Blend it all into a coarse paste, Do not blend the dal into a fine paste.
- Take a thick bottom pan or a kadhai. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them pop up. • Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
Now, Add hing, curry leaves, turmeric powder, and red chili powder and mix well. Add blended dal and mix well. - Stir on medium flame till the dal completely dries up and there are no lumps left.
- Cover dal & cook on low to medium heat for about 2-3 minutes. After 5 minutes, stir continuously.
- Add salt & red chili powder. Mix it well.
- Dal should be cooked completely.
- Remove the lid and mix the dal again.
- Again cover and cook for about the next 2-3 minutes.
- Repeat this process for about 8-10 minutes until dal is nicely cooked.
- Add salt to taste and mix well.
- Add lemon juice and mix well. • Lemon juice is optional.
- Add coriander leaves and mix well. • Cover and cook on medium heat for just another 2 minutes.
- Turn off the gas and Vatali dal is ready.
- Garnish with fresh shredded coconut and coriander leaves while serving.
- The dal will be nice and separated
- Sprinkle chopped coriander and freshly desiccated coconut. Serve hot. Dal is ready for Ganapati Parshad.
- It is offered to Lord Ganesha on the day of Visarjan.
