Parijat – Night Flowering Jasmine

There is something fresh, sweet, beautiful about these night jasmine flowers aka parijata. When October comes and these flowers bloom, they carpet the ground with their beautiful white and orange shades.

• Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, so many names, and such lovely feel it radiates.

Parijat

The word ‘parijat’ literally means descended from or celestial. No wonder, the name ‘Harsingar’ translates into God’s ornament. The flowers of parijat bloom at night and this is why they are called night-flowering jasmine. It is called ‘Shefali’ in Bengali. Also called as sepalika In Sri Lanka.

In other words, It is also called Kalpavriksha – a tree that fulfills every desire in your heart and what you may ask for it.  In the local language, it is referred to as ‘Raat ki rani’- simplifying the supernatural phenomena that the plant can thrive without Sunlight.

I have even read that According to Bhagavata Purana, Mahabharata, and the Vishnu Purana, parijat flowers were produced as a result of samundra manthan.

In addition, In North-East India, parijat is known as bewail or shiuli. In Bengal, it is added to fish recipes and to make the fish curry more aromatic. parijat comes with its unique share of medicinal benefits.
