Tree Love Gulmohar – Royal poinciana

Saw this beauty while taking a stroll on Chennai roads. I had gone there for 2 days for some task, but the evening was free for me. And instead of checking out malls or shopping, I preferred just walking down the roads. Greens have their own beauty and what spotted my attention was the bunch of Red flowers amongst all the greens.

When I searched for the name, it’s not known by any, one particular name, but known by various names.

Gulmohar is called as “Royal Poinciana” in English. The scientific name of Gulmohar is Delonix regia and it belongs to the Fabaceae family of the flowering plants. It is native to Madagascar and planted worldwide as an ornamental/avenue tree. Noted for its fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of flowers. It is also one of several trees known as the Flame tree.

It is also known there as Krishnachura or Krusnachuda (Bengali/Odia: the crown of the Krishna) and Krishnasura (in Assamese and Bengali). In Kerala, it is known as Alasippoo. The tree’s vivid red/vermilion/orange/yellow flowers and bright green foliage make it an exceptionally striking sight. The time I visited was not it’s full bloom so I was able to see only one bunch of red flowers.
