Super 30 #WATWB
Anand Kumar the super mind behind – Super 30
Super 30 institute was founded by math wizard Anand Kumar in 2002, where he selects 30 talented students from underprivileged/ poor sections of the society and trains them for IIT-JEE/JEE-ADVANCED entrance exam. Soon a biopic is going to be released on this huge sensation.
Anand was born in a below middle-class family in Patna, Bihar. He discovered his love for mathematics while he was studying in Hindi medium government school. Cause of his love for mathematics, after passing from Patna high school, he submitted papers on number theory, which were published in Mathematical Spectrum and The Mathematical Gazette while being in graduation.
He was accepted by Cambridge University and was close to realizing his dream of becoming a mathematician but life had planned something else and his father suddenly passed away. The household income diminished gradually and Kumar supported his mother who made papad, which he sold door-to-door in the evenings while writing mathematical theories in the daytime.
The journey
Since his mother’s business was not enough to support his family, In 1995, at the age of 22, he rented a classroom for Rs. 500 a month. Maths coaching started to students and class which was started with two students turned out to 36 in one year. In 3 years’ time, almost 500 students joined the Ramanujan School of Mathematics (RSM) renowned, the world over.
In the year 2000, when a poor student came for coaching for IIT-JEE who couldn’t effort fees due to poverty.
Super30
Anand Kumar was motivated and came up with an idea of Super 30. He realized he didn’t want to take away the boy’s only hope of changing his life because he couldn’t pay. Then and there, he decided to form a group of 30 bright students. All from poor families, provide them with board and lodging and prepare them for IIT. In May 2002, his institute the Ramanujan School of Mathematics conducted tests for the Super 30 program for economically backward students. All those who were seeking admission in IIT-Jee, and he selected perfect 30 students for his guidance to crack it.
God helps those who dare to dream and walk on it to fulfill them. During this program, students are provided absolutely free coaching, lodging, and food. His brother Pranav Kumar, a violinist by profession, manages the institute, while his mother cooks for the students.
Super 30 gained popularity with his vision and guidance wherein 2003-2017, In the last seven years, 182 students out of 210 have made it to different IITs of the country. And for the last two years, all thirty students of Super 30 have made it to IIT. Parents of some students are bricklayers some work as domestic help. Now many students are working in Europe and the US as well.
This group was named Super 30, with a mission of making education accessible to every poor child in India. He even wishes the kids he has taught, come back to their hometowns and do something for their people, their village.
A great teacher
But the irony is at times its hurtful to see that some forget about giving back to society. No funds, no financial support, no government support and strictly say no to donation. This man behind so many successful IIT students raised funds by his Ramanujan School of Mathematics evening classes in Patna.
Today, he is an Indian mathematician, educationalist, and columnist for various national and international mathematical journals and magazines. He is a teacher who is making his student’s life worth and meaningful.
