How to observe Soil day
December 5 is observed as World Soil Day. It supports and encourages the sustainable management of soil resources. Soil day theme for 2020 was to Keep soil alive, protect soil biodiversity. And this year the theme is ‘Halt Soil Salinisation, Boost Soil Productivity’ – raising awareness about the topmost layer of land that we all depend on for our food. The soil day aims to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing the growing challenges in soil management, fighting soil salinization, increasing soil awareness, and encouraging societies to improve soil health.
Soil is composed of five ingredients — minerals, soil organic matter, living organisms, gas, and water.
This soil day let’s pledge to refuse plastic as plastic ultimately lands up in landfills and causes harm to our soil. We don’t realize that Plastics especially micro-plastics can change the soil chemistry due to their extensive use and low degradation rate.
What you can do to observe this day
You can avoid single-use plastics, which when discarded can be harmful to the soil. By choosing eco-friendly, gardening, cleaning, and personal care products, you can take care of the soil around you. Dispose of hazardous waste like batteries responsibly. Composting your food waste gives nutrients to the soil.
This World Soil Day let’s take a pledge to Refuse a few things that harm our soil.
- Refuse to buy or accept products that can harm you, your surroundings, and the environment.
- Please say “NO” to that bag which you are buying. Think once again if you are going to use that reusable grocery bag, by all means then only buy it. Else if it going to land in your bin, please refuse it.
- Choose eco-friendly, gardening, cleaning and personal care products.
- Refuse chemical solvents and use alternatives that are water-based.
- Refuse packing or packaging material that is unnecessary and you will end up disposing.
- Dispose of hazardous waste like batteries responsibly.
- Compost your food waste.
- Make it a habit and ask the question, “Why are we purchasing this item?” or, “Why do we need this?”
