Green Talks Ep 40 – Green Tatwa Talks Featuring – Dr. Sanjeevani Sharma founder – Kanpur Ploggers

“Plogging is brilliant because it is simple and fun while empowering everyone to
help create cleaner, greener, and more beautiful communities”.

Have you ever thought of clubbing your walking or jogging along with an added health benefit? Not just your health but also the health of your Planet Earth. Now you can jog and clean your surroundings while on the run. This activity is called plogging and those who do it are called Ploggers.

Plogging

Plogging is a fitness and environmental activity that originated in Sweden. The term “plogging” is a combination of two words: “plocka upp,” which means “to pick up” in Swedish, and “jogging.” The concept is simple: while you’re out jogging or running, you also pick up litter and trash that you find along the way.

Plogging has gained popularity as a way to promote both physical health and environmental sustainability. It encourages people to take responsibility for their local environment by cleaning up litter while getting exercise. Participants typically carry a bag or small trash receptacle and gloves to collect trash they come across during their run. The activity not only helps to keep the environment cleaner but also raises awareness about the problem of litter and pollution.

Plogging has been embraced in many countries as a community or group activity, and it’s seen as a way to combine personal fitness with eco-friendly efforts. It’s a simple yet effective way for individuals to make a positive impact on their local surroundings and contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet. Beyond the physical and environmental benefits, plogging also fosters a sense of community involvement and responsibility. It’s a simple yet effective way for individuals to make a positive impact on their surroundings and inspire others to do the same.

Erik Ahlström started plogging in Sweden in 2016. It can be practiced on trails, mountains, beaches, and in urban areas.

Plogging promotes environmental consciousness. It can be practiced by:

  • Jogging or brisk walking
  • Picking up trash
  • Cleaning up litter
  • Taking care of your health
  • Keeping streets and paths litter-free

Plogging has been gaining more practitioners. For example:

  • The Save Bharalu Abhiyan collected 3 quintals of garbage during a city plogging.
  • Bevli organized more than 500 cleanups across 80 cities under the Litter Free India movement.
  • The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has plogged to lead by example for his Swachh Bharat Mission to clean up India.
